WOMEN IN SOUNDSYSTEM // SEDUCTION CITY SOUND TILL 2AM

  • Grow 98c Wallis Road London, England, E9 5LN United Kingdom (map)

We continue to celebrate International Women’s Day with an event celebrating women in soundsystem culture, brought to you by one of the only female run soundsystems in the UK, Seduction City Sound. We host an all day/night dance at our canalside venue with an all female line up!

£5 after 9pm

Seduction City founder Marilyn Dennis, aka Lady Banton, has over 34 years DJ/Selector experience and started DJ’ing in the mid-eighties in North London. Her early influences and mentors were watching sound men assembling their sounds during youth club sessions back in the early/ mid-seventies. Listening to female DJ’s like Ranking Miss P and DJ Elayne spurred her on into the game.

Lady Banton’s early DJ experience was with the ’80’s Ladies’ a DJ collective with three other female DJ’s. In 1989 Lady Banton went on and teamed up with another female DJ, Night Nurse to form the Mellotone Sound System. They played in and around north London, the usual house/club parties, christenings, etc but always had a dream to play at Europe’s largest street party Notting Hill Carnival.

Mellotone’s dream finally happened when they first secured their year to year spot at the Notting Hill Carnival in 1994 on Telford Road. Mellotone’s mission has always been to promote ‘women in dancehall’ and to bring authentic clean reggae dancehall to their audience. their highlight to date was supporting Queen Omega during her UK tour in 2004, they appeared on the main stage in Hyde Park at the Queen’s Jubilee which featured on the BBC six o’clock news.

In 2016, Lady Banton formed Seduction City Sound, continuing her journey in the sound system world. With the help of some veteran sound men/engineers, Lady Banton has welcomed Selectors Spice2life, Mc’s Alternating Current. Seduction City Sound has continued to gain its reputation at the Notting Hill Carnival during the August bank holiday weekend and Telford road is now affectionately known as ‘Jamaica Corner’ so if you are ever in town, come on down and catch the vibe.

Lady Banton continues to reach new horizons and in 2019 Lady Banton performed in Forest Uprising in London and in November 2020 Lady Banton also took part in the London Borough of Culture for Brent, Women in Black British Music. Watch this space as Lady Banton and her crew continue to break boundaries.
