ESE & THE VOODUU PEOPLE
Championed by Iggy Pop, Lena Dunham, Cerys Matthews, Jools Holland, Alabama 3 and many more, ESE & THE VOODUU PEOPLE play an electric and eclectic blend of funk, soul, Afrobeat, jazz and rock’n’roll, and tap into deep wells of spiritual energy.
Singer-songwriter and guitarist Ese was born to make music. “I heard Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix and never looked back,” she says, and though raised as a London child on grunge, hip-hop and r'n'b, her Nigerian heritage’s traditional spirituality also shaped the artist she is today. “It was almost like music chose me, rather than I chose music,” Ese says.
Ese busked on the streets of London for a couple of years before finding a place for herself in the studio and on stages ranging from intimate pubs and clubs to heaving festivals. She has released two acclaimed studio albums, UP IN SMOKE and IS THIS JAZZ? and the live MERCURY IN RETROGRADE. She performed in 2025’s hit Netflix series TOO MUCH and her classic DYNAMITE features on the soundtrack album alongside tracks by artists ranging from Nina Simone, John Cale and Richard and Linda Thompson to Sugababes and Cate Le Bon.

RITMO DEL BARRIO PRESENT CHICHA PRO FAVOR (LATIN-PUNK, PERUVIAN CUMBIA, TROPICAL)
ABOUT THE EVENT
Chicha Por Favor returns with a slightly twisted compass. Known for its deep love of Peruvian chicha and vintage tropical sounds, this edition opens the dancefloor where cumbia heat collides with punk urgency.
Headlining the night are Chico Majara, a London-based Latin-punk beast. Their sound fuses the sensual swing of salsa and boogaloo with the feral energy of early punk, Caribbean sweat, sharp edges, and theatrical intensity.
Live, Chico Majara are explosive: wild, sassy, physical, and impossible to ignore. Fresh from UK and European stages, they arrive armed with their latest release Suave Y Salvaje, a concept EP blending recording techniques from different eras into a uniquely pulsating, modern tropical sound.
Supporting the live chaos, the DJs keep the journey rooted and roaming across the Latin Americas:
Tomoko (Tropical Yard) spins an electrifying mix of jazz, swing, R&B, soul, funk, gospel, and Afro-Latin & Caribbean sounds, all on 45s and 78s, delivering a whirlwind vintage dance experience.
Paskal Rough & Tough (Cool Breeze) digs deep into the 60s–70s sounds of Jamaica, the Caribbean, and Latin America. From Peruvian Andes to Colombian coasts, Panamanian calypso to French Antilles rhythms, Jamaican basslines to Mexican accordion hypnosis: a true tropical voyage.
Representing the heart of the night, Ritmo del Barrio brings its signature selection rooted in vintage Latin American music, with a special focus on Peruvian cumbia (chicha), connecting past, present, and future on the dancefloor.
This is Chicha Por Favor — not traditional, not polite, but still deeply tropical. Come early, stay late, dance hard.

PETRO // FRESH INSTALLATIONS // FREE
Eleven years ago, as part of the Hackney WickED Arts Festival events programme, an installation by long-standing Hackney Wick–based visual artist Duncan “Petro” Weston was in the making.
It was unveiled on 1 August 2014, alongside The Cult of Rammellzee, as a collaborative ritual performance and installation that raised spirits at The Writers Bench, with Petro’s graffiti-drenched work providing the backdrop to the scenes.
This installation has stood the test of time, witnessing thousands of musicians and artists perform in front of it, and even more people enjoying live performances and dancing to DJs.
In 2026, after so much partying, it was decided that it was finally time for a refresh for the next generation of revellers. As Petro is still very much part of the Grow family, he’s back to do just that.
To mark the occasion, we’re hosting an opening event on Wednesday 14 January, 6–11pm, where you can see the newly refreshed installation alongside an additional temporary installation by Weston in the Mezz Gallery.
The Mezz Gallery installation features a triptych of paintings from his long-standing project engaging with Subway Art, the iconic graffiti publication by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant. The work offers a loose, expressive take on the book, highlighting its importance to graffiti culture while capturing the energy and movement of the original images in paint.
Expect DJs, T-shirts, and good vibes.

ABOUT THE EVENT & DJS
Girlz B Like: 10 Years Strong – and Ready to Razzle Dazzle London One More Time
Following the incredible success of their 10th birthday celebration, where crowds packed the venue despite the day's train chaos, the grassroots brand has announced its grand finale of the year: Girlz B Like: End of Year Razzle Dazzle Christmas Party, lat its spiritual home Grow, Hackney Wick, on Saturday 13 December 2025.
Now, the stage is set for one last dance of the year, a festive blow-out promising all the sparkle of the season and all the soul of the underground. Making her Girlz B Like debut, Donna Gibson (Paris-based vinyl purist and daughter of Gibson Brothers’ legend Patrick Gibson) is set to spin tropical boogie and sun-kissed disco melodies. Joining her, DJ Paloma brings back her infectious, joy-filled selections after lighting up the decks at this year’s International Women’s Day celebration. And of course, Marcia DaVinylMC, the GBL founder and creative heartbeat, rounds out the lineup with deep disco, Afrobeat, gospel, funk, and real house cuts to keep the dance floor glowing till late.
Dress to dazzle - think gold, silver, velvet red, and everything shiny. Forget your office party: this is the Christmas event where glamour meets groove and community reigns supreme.
Ten years in and still one nation under a groove.

FROM THE CRATES: KING DOM (BRASIL: WAY DOWN DEEP BELOW THE DANCEFLOOR) FREE
Discover an evening of deep listening, rare grooves and carefully curated selections at Grow Hackney. More than background music, it’s a chance to slow down, tune in and experience the craft of selectors.
SET FOCUS
Brasil: Way Down Deep Below the Dancefloor travels the road less trodden, exploring the deep and underplayed. When records are bought for "that" tune, the real gold is often found in the overlooked grooves beneath the dust.
Brazilian musicians have a unique ability to express and embrace the complexities of human life with deep and beautiful resonance: the love, the tragedy, the saudade, the joy, and the multitude of expressions that come from living a life in touch with a deeper purpose.
The set creates a magnificent quilted tapestry in which listeners can feel safe and enveloped. Eyes half-closed, a slow head nod, a shared glance with a friend silently communicates that this may be the best music they have ever heard and that it is also listening back.
While primarily a listening experience that travels the broad map of Brazil, King Dom can seamlessly transition to dancing if demanded, with changes that feel natural and fluid.
ABOUT THE SELECTOR
King Dom is a lifelong collector and student of vinyl archaeology, a collaborator, curator, creator, and discoverer. Black music forms the foundation of his life, while Brazilian music is the blood that sustains his soul.
Among his proudest moments is a reissue for TimeCapsule Records of an underrecognised Brazilian artist and album, which sold out completely before the first press. Another highlight was a six-hour Brazilian set for the 69th BFI London Film Festival, where every visitor, whether waiting for a show, attending the set, or drawn in by curiosity, embraced the music and danced throughout the night.
Every time King Dom unifies a room of strangers and guides them into a deep, immersive experience, it produces a feeling beyond compare.
ABOUT THE SERIES
From The Crates is a free DJ series at Grow Hackney designed for anyone who wants to listen deeply and discover music in a way you cannot get from streaming services. Listeners can expect to be immersed in an intimate, canal-side bar setting where the focus is on atmosphere, mood, and connection. From jazz, funk, soul, psych, dub, ambient, early electronica, highlife, MPB, and beyond, each set offers something new to hear, feel, and experience.
