This thursday we have a very special guest hosting the evening. Donovan Haffner recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, undertaking a BMus degree, specialising in Jazz. Donovan has played with a multitude of professional musicians including the big contemporary British names such as Moses Boyd, Charlie Stacey, and Jay Phelps, Balimaya Project, and European contemporary names such as Rasmus Sorenson. He has toured with star drummer Moses Boyd including around Italy at only 18 years old and at various places around the UK. Donovan is also included in Jay Phelps’ Miles Davis Kind of Blue Project who play shows around the UK. Gary Crosby OBE, Alex Davis and Binker Golding of Tomorrow’s Warriors were amongst some of his mentors in his earlier years. Joining the band is special guest, Byron Wallen, a celebrated trumpeter and composer, recognised as a seminal figure in world jazz. Known for his dynamic performances and collaborations with legends like George Benson, Hugh Masekela, Chaka Khan, and Mulatu Astatke, Wallen's work spans continents and genres. He leads his band, Four Corners, which was shortlisted for Jazz Ensemble of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2020. His latest album, Portrait: Reflections on Belonging, further cements his influence on the UK jazz scene. Wallen also composes for film and theatre and teaches at leading music institutions including Trinity Laban and Guildhall School of Music. In 2017, he was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2024 AT GROW

This event is part of a Black-led Events Series ranging from spoken word, poetry, jazz, to live percussion, talks, Q&As and legendary DJs. At each of these events, we’re offering 20 free spaces to those with a Hackney Postcode.

All artists are existing partners of Grow and offer a breadth of experience and passion. All established in their creative disciplines, these Black-led events intend to inspire and share stories of culture, journey and heritage all underpinned by the theme of this year's BHM, which is reclaiming the narrative. Join us for the next instalment of ROOTS where we bring you an intimate night of discovery and immersive, global sounds. This month, join Brazilian-inspired Novos Londrinos, where Latin sounds collide to create a London fusion.

LINE UP

Novos Londrinos are a Brazilian-inspired band based in north London. Cláudia, Jackson, Jonny, Gio and Rachel were brought together by their love of bossa nova, samba & MPB.  Since September 2021 they’ve been writing their own original songs as well as covers of Brazilian classics from the 60s and 70s. Channelling the music of icons like Marcos Valle, Gilberto Gil, and Sérgio Mendes (and of course their inspiration Novos Baianos), their sets are packed with infectious rhythms and enchanting melodies. They’ve been gigging regularly across London in established venues like The Slaughtered Lamb, The Jago, Doña, Colours Hoxton, and Paper Dress Vintage and recorded their debut EP at Giant Wafer and Abbey Road studios this year (to be released in late 2024). They also regularly perform and collaborate with other top artists in the thriving London Latin/Brazilian scene like Inês Loubet, Alvorada, Olayá, Bea Asurmendi and XATIVA.  

Lisbon born and London-based artist, Ana De Llor, is a queer artist and proud to be known for highlighting stories of women which have been undermined or misinterpreted throughout history or myth. Her music and body of work is for equality, for the power and voice of ALL women and her EP "Not Your Holy Ghost" is a striking statement on reclaiming back your power. When asked, she describes her sound with 3 distinct points: "Dark Pop, with Portuguese hints, and heavily feminist". As a musician with a background on visual arts, De Llor faces her work as one whole piece where both worlds melt, and all image aspects of it are self created, directed and edited. Her music and talent has been continuously supported by the likes of BBC 6, NOTION, EARMILK, as well as being awarded with a Drake Yolanda Award after showcasing her work in front of a Spotify and BBC panel.

• Our kitchen is open until 10pm and serves a range of dishes and snacks. We have a range of drinks from the bar (open until 11.45pm) including Grow’s signature cocktails.

Happy Hour: Come to Grow between 5-7pm on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and enjoy offers on cocktails, wine and lager. From great rates on our specially curated organic wines, discounts on our signature cocktails to two of award winning lager for a tenner (!)

Our Spice Trail Menu is predominantly plant based, with some ethically sourced meat options, as part of our conscious drive towards sustainability. Our passion is for the cooking of the Middle East and southern Mediterranean so expect punchy flavours, warm spices and as always the best ingredients we can find to comfort and nourish the soul.  

With our drinks, we partner with breweries St Austell and Signature Brew for our lagers and IPAs and serve organic wine and prosecco which help international wildlife charity, Born Free. We design our spin on such drinks as Rum Punch, homemade Hackney Spiced Rum and Espresso Martini.

Every Thursday for more than 6 years our house jazz band Stratos, led by the Mercury Prize nominated Rio Kai, have taken us on a voyage through classic, straight ahead, hard bop & Jazz fusion! Stratos features Rio Kai, Jamie Murray & Dom Pusey.

This week we’re part of London Fashion Week presented by 1664 Blanc City Wide Celebration is a curated programme of unique experiences and activations open to the public!

After the first set, they open up the jam to jazz musicians who want to get involved! Contact @stratostheband on Instagram if you’re interested in jamming. It’s free entry for jammers.
