Grow is independent and grassroots with international impact. Local and emerging artists are programmed alongside international artists.
Since GROW opened our doors in 2014, we’ve hosted 250+ events each year and had over 150,000 people through our doors.
Young musicians have jammed with Abass Dodoo (Ginger Baker band), Japanese contemporary dancers and indigenous didgeridoo masters from Australia, to name just a few. Our artist partners credit the collaborations, regularity of exposure and payments as helping them hone their craft. Those for come to Grow for the entertainment, food and drink experience a span of genres and together we celebrate diverse culture from around the globe to down the road.

This week Williams Cumberbache meets Gnawa London is the project of Moroccan Berber Simo Lagnawi. A wholehearted expression of devotion, Lagnawi was raised in the Gnawa tradition and is an award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music, remaining true to his musical heritage. Since moving to London in 2008, Lagnawi has established himself as the UK’s leading Guembri player, and has sought to spread Gnawa music throughout the culture in a variety of ways. Whether through crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars, or through hosting traditional ceremonial evenings – known as Lilas – the intention is always to bring the same healing energy through to the fore in each new creation.
Lagnawi was nominated for 2 Songlines awards in 2014, for Best Newcomer and Best Artist, and his first solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ was featured in Songlines Magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ in September 2013. Throughout his career, Lagnawi has been featured on BBC World Service, CNN World, BBC 3, and BBC 6, and has played a host of festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Latitude and Boom Town

The Craig Carri trio is a guitar-led group which takes its influence from the likes of John Schofield and Bill Frisell. With improvisation and playfulness at the band’s core instruments take on different roles as the music develops, moving between deep swinging grooves, soaring melodies to playing with floating, spacious textures.
Expect to hear fresh takes on tunes from Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, in addition to some choice jazz standards.
Originally from Co. Kildare, Ireland, Craig has been living in London for the past 12 years, building a reputation as a respected guitarist within London’s vibrant and diverse scene. Craig has performed in many of London’s prestigious jazz venues, and further afield around the UK, Europe and South America.
Having studied with some of the best musicians of our time, Craig has a broad range of influences from the jazz tradition, contemporary music and South American music, particularly from Brazil.

Mike McKenzie on drums is a creative in music and film. He came up through Reggae, Calypso and Steel pan and plays various styles of music. He has played with many artists including Root Jackson , Kevin Leo , Janet Kay, Imaani, Ray Carless.
Michael Searl on bass….'Having originally learnt to play the instrument from West African bandleaders, Michael loves all things bass, and enjoys playing all styles of music - from Country to Calypso.'
David Bitelli on tenor sax has over the years been involved with many aspects of the London Jazz, Latin, African and Caribbean music scene as well exploring his Jewish heritage and Balkan culture.
Special guest on guitar TJ (holyboy) Johnson was brought up on Calypso and Reggae being influenced by his Dad who played guitar and violin. He then aquired Blues Funk Jazz and African music on the way. Playing in several of those types including Assagai and Spartacus R from Osisibisa. TJ’s main objective is to be as authentic as possible in respect of all the different styles he plays.

Experience the captivating sounds of this week’s special guest, Aleph Aguiar, a Venezuelan-born international musician and composer, known for his unique blend of Afro-Venezuelan Jazz and diverse jazz influences. With three acclaimed albums under his belt, including the latest, ‘Lunchtime,’ Aleph has made a significant mark on the global music scene.
Aleph’s career highlights include working with legendary artists like Simon Diaz and Maria Rivas, as well as collaborating with UK jazz luminaries such as Tony Kofi and Quentin Collins. His versatile talent has also seen him record with Frank Ocean, Elton John, and coach for 'The Inbetweeners 2' movie.
Currently, Aleph is performing with award-winning jazz singer Georgia Cecil, including shows at the iconic Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club. His diverse experience extends to the West End stage, where he was the guitarist for 'On Your Feet' and the UK tour of 'Hairspray.'

Hailed as one of the finest Brazilian percussion players to have worked in Europe, Bosco De Oliveira plays jazz-influenced Brazilian music and has worked with the likes of Airto Moreira (Miles Davis) and Dom Um Romao (Weather Report). Bosco is considered to be one of the most influential of the Brazilian musicians to have lived in the UK. He was one of the co-founders of the London School of Samba and includes work with the likes of Hamish Stuart and Terry Callier on a hugely impressive CV. A highly regarded teacher and lecturer. He playes music Bosco describes as “Brazilian roots with a Jazz/Dance approach”.

Cubana Bop was formed in 1995 out of a weekly Latin jam session at the infamous Casablanca club in Brighton and over the years the band members have included Byron Wallen, Raul D’Olivera, Gary Kavanagh, and Tristan Banks with performances and recordings with top US musicians such as percussionists Pucho and Bobby Mattos and the flautist Dave Valentine.
During that time the band has performed at over 400 gigs at venues and festivals including Brecon, Edinburgh, London’s Jazz Café and The Festival Hall and Barbican Foyers. Both of the first two CDs (Can’t Stop Now -1995 -featuring Bobby Wellins and The Story So Far -2000- produced by Snowboy) received rave reviews. The music is all jazz with a strong Latin Afro-Cuban flavour featuring originals penned by Seabrook and a classic jazz standard, Jeanine by Duke Pearson.
Graeme Flowers plays Trumpet and graduated from the London College of Music in 2000 and has recorded and toured with Kyle Eastwood, John Dankworth, Snowboy, James Taylor Quartet, The Brand New Heavies, Martin Taylor, and the BBC Big Band.
Adam Riley plays Timbalero and has performed with Jamie Cullum, Katie Melua, Gary Husband, Don Weller, Alan Barnes, Alex Garnett, Mornington Lockett, Robin Jones and Azul. Bassist Davide Mantovani arrived in London from his native Italy in 1991, and has played with some of the most illustrious Jazz and Latin artists around: Andy Sheppard, Ian Carr, Tony Remy, Gilad Atzmon, Antonio Forcione & Monica Vasconcelos. He has appeared at festivals in Edinburgh, Brecon, France, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Ireland and Luxembourg.
Ian Price plays both sax and flute and works with his own quartet as well as the Brazilian group Basiado and has appeared with Mike Outram, John Donaldson, Herbie Flowers. Satin Singh plays congas and is as versed in Indian percussion as he is in Latin music. He began playing timbales in King Salsa as well as most of the Salsa bands in London. He has worked with Roberto Pla, Denys Baptiste, Jazz Jamaica, Matt Bianco and Down to the Bone.
Terry Seabrook (leader/piano) studied jazz at Eastman School in NY and started his career in 1985 touring Europe and the Middle East with US Jazz singer Joe Lee Wilson. His trio performs regularly in Brighton and London and has performed with Harry Edison, Sonny Stitt, Archie Shepp, and Jimmy Witherspoon. On the Latin scene Terry has worked with Robin Jones, Snowboy and Pucho. He is a busy Jazz piano teacher and appears as a tutor at The Jamey Abersold Summer School each year. He has written pieces for the Associated Board Jazz Piano syllabus and the Trinity Popular Piano syllabus.

This week Williams Cumberbache meets Gnawa London is the project of Moroccan Berber Simo Lagnawi. A wholehearted expression of devotion, Lagnawi was raised in the Gnawa tradition and is an award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music, remaining true to his musical heritage. Since moving to London in 2008, Lagnawi has established himself as the UK’s leading Guembri player, and has sought to spread Gnawa music throughout the culture in a variety of ways. Whether through crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars, or through hosting traditional ceremonial evenings – known as Lilas – the intention is always to bring the same healing energy through to the fore in each new creation.
Lagnawi was nominated for 2 Songlines awards in 2014, for Best Newcomer and Best Artist, and his first solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ was featured in Songlines Magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ in September 2013. Throughout his career, Lagnawi has been featured on BBC World Service, CNN World, BBC 3, and BBC 6, and has played a host of festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Latitude and Boom Town.

Mike McKenzie on drums is a creative in music and film. He came up through Reggae, Calypso and Steel pan and plays various styles of music. He has played with many artists including Root Jackson , Kevin Leo , Janet Kay, Imaani, Ray Carless.
Michael Searl on bass….'Having originally learnt to play the instrument from West African bandleaders, Michael loves all things bass, and enjoys playing all styles of music - from Country to Calypso.'
David Bitelli on tenor sax has over the years been involved with many aspects of the London Jazz, Latin, African and Caribbean music scene as well exploring his Jewish heritage and Balkan culture.
Special guest on guitar TJ (holyboy) Johnson was brought up on Calypso and Reggae being influenced by his Dad who played guitar and violin. He then aquired Blues Funk Jazz and African music on the way. Playing in several of those types including Assagai and Spartacus R from Osisibisa. TJ’s main objective is to be as authentic as possible in respect of all the different styles he plays.

Joining Williams on the River Lea pontoon stage this week is the very special guest Edward Wakili-Hick AKA Natcyet. A drummer and producer based in London. He was an original member of the South London born artist collective, Steam Down. In 2017 he joined the group Sons of Kemet. Wakili-Hick has also worked with artists and bands including; Angelique Kidjo, Protoje, Alicia Keys, Horace Andy, Freddie McGregor, Bobby Watson, Edward Simon, Nubya Garcia and Kokoroko. As a bandleader he has led his own groups at venues including Jazz Refreshed and Ronnie Scotts, as well as performing solo sets at the Royal Albert Hall. His project Nok Cultural Ensemble, a modern sonic exploration of African and Caribbean rhythms, have a record due to be released in 2022.
