Join us for a night of deep grooves as Abdoulaye Samb and Minnjiaraby blend Senegalese traditions with blues and jazz, joined by Dare Balogun and TrYb. A night of celebrating African rhythms and their global influence!
ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND DJS
We’re excited to welcome back Abdoulaye Samb to Grow, Hackney! Originally from Senegal, Abdoulaye is a guitarist, singer, and composer whose music is deeply rooted in Fula and Mandinka traditions, fused with blues, jazz, and global influences. His band Minnjiaraby—meaning "the love of culture"—creates a unique soundscape of intricate guitar work, hypnotic rhythms, and soulful melodies. Having played across Africa and Europe, Abdoulaye brings an energy that is both uplifting and immersive, carrying the stories and spirit of Senegalese music into every performance.
Senegal gained independence from France on April 4, 1960, marking the birth of a sovereign nation rooted in rich cultural heritage and resilience. This day is a celebration of freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of Senegalese people, reflected in their music, dance, and traditions. As we come together for this event, we also honour Senegal’s legacy—connecting its deep musical traditions with the global rhythms that continue to inspire and evolve. It’s more than just a party; it’s a tribute to history, culture, and the power of music to bring people together.
Keeping the party going after the gig is Dare Balogun, a British-Nigerian artist and curator, Dare seamlessly blends traditional African genres—Highlife, Soukous, and Makossa—into contemporary dance music. As a Balamii Radio resident and founder of Roots to Rhythm, his work highlights the deep connection between African rhythms and modern electronic sounds. His DJ sets, which have taken him from London’s Brilliant Corners to international stages like The Barbican and Public Records NYC, are an exploration of groove, culture, and history. Expect a journey through vibrant percussive sounds, deep-rooted traditions, and forward-thinking club energy.
Warming up the evening is TrYb, a local heavyweight selector, has taken the UK and European music scenes by storm with an undeniable energy. Her electrifying presence has graced iconic stages such as Glastonbury, where she captivated audiences, and she has had the honour of opening for global sensation Megan Thee Stallion.
In addition to her live performances, TrYb is a respected radio host, helming The Highlife and Sunshine Show on NTS and TrYb and Friends on Voices Radio, where she shares her unique blend of diasporic sounds. Unrestricted by genre, TrYb is a master of setting new levels, continuously pushing musical boundaries and making her mark on the global stage.
This event is a celebration of the global connections between African traditions and contemporary sounds. From the deep grooves of Senegal to the dancefloor energy of Afro-infused club music, bringing together two visionary artists who honour the past while shaping the future. A truly unique and unmissable night of rhythm, culture, and movement!
